Sony Xperia Z gets an update

Sony is now seeding the first update for the Xperia Z (C6603) flagship. Its build number is 10.1.A.1.434, the Android version stays 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and the Kernel seems to be the same - 3.4.0.
Even though there is no official change log for this unexpected update, rumors have it the new release addresses the sudden-death issue plaguing random Xperia Z (C6603) units. So, while it doesn't add any extra functionality, the update might save quite a lot of trouble for many Xperia Z owners out there.
Sony is releasing the update in stages both via the PC Companion app and over-the-air. You should check both for the update and if it isn't available for you already, it should pop up in a few days.
If you are of the impatient kind, you can follow the source link to download the update and proceed to flash it manually but, since doing so will void your warranty, you better make sure you know what you are doing.

Facebook updates Android app For Google Play

A new Facebook update has now hit the Google Play Store, bringing with it the ability to change profile pictures from within the app. Additionally, it is now easier to manage unwanted stories and spam from within the News Feed. Outside of these two changes, Facebook also made improvements that make it easy to start a group message with fewer taps and less hassle.

As you can see, nothing truly ground-breaking was introduced with this update, though Facebook is changing up the way it launches updates. Even though this update is just now hitting Google Play, some users have had it since Friday.

How does that work exactly? Apparently Facebook has a new beta program that is designed to push out updates to beta testers. The method works silently in the background, outside of Google Play. This gives testers a chance to provide feedback before the update hits a wider range of users via Google Play.

According to Facebook, the silent update feature will be used for testers going forward as a way to make sure that new updates work as they should. It is actually seems like a pretty wise move, as it gives a few willing volunteers early access to updates and at the same time means Facebook can discover bugs and other problems before updates launch. Beyond volunteer testers, Facebook doesn’t seem interested in using this silent update method to replace normal Google Play delivery.

Galaxy Note 3 display size possibly outed by Samsung’s new Game pad

Not only did Samsung announce the Galaxy S4 last night, but the Korean tech giant also announced a truck load of accessories that will be available for it. One of those accessories may have unveiled the display size of the rumored Galaxy Note 3.

One of the accessories that will be accompanying the Galaxy S4 is the Game Pad, which makes game playing easier with an adjustable clamp and controller functionality. That clamp is able to scale up to 6.3-inches, which is interesting since Samsung, at the time of writing, does not offer a device that is 6.3-inches in size.

Read also: Galaxy Note 3 could feature LCD display for improved S Pen experience

Is it just a coincidence though? No it isn’t  When Samsung, or any manufacturer, makes a product, it goes through a heavy and thorough design process, which means that the Game Pad’s adjustable clamp can scale to 6.3-inches for a reason.

Samsung, of course, will not confirm or deny the rumor, but a 6.3-inch display on the Galaxy Note 3 does fall in line with other rumors. We’ll likely see a Galaxy Note 3 unveiling in August at IFA in Berlin, Germany, which is where the Korean tech giant announced the Galaxy Note 2.

Samsung Galaxy Grand

Design
Like most Galaxy handsets, the Grand cuts a slim (0.38-inch to be exact) profile, is of a long rectangular shape with severely rounded corners, and has a wide home button at the bottom of the display.

Measuring 5.65 inches tall and nearly 3 inches wide, it has a spacious 5-inch LCD display that's responsive and bright. However, I did notice that colors like blue and green appeared more saturated than other hues.

The Grand features a thin chrome strip that borders all around its edges, and the phone's glossy plastic build keeps it lightweight.
As far as Galaxy devices go, the Grand doesn't break any molds in terms of design. Honestly, if it were to be mixed up in a bag with the Young and the Fame, I wouldn't know how to tell one from the next aside from screen size (though the Fame's bulbous home button could be a first clue).

Features
One interesting feature of the Grand is Multi Window, which lets you multitask with your apps through a little access arrow on the side of the screen.

Simply turn it on in the notifications bar and tap the arrow on the side of your screen. A row of common apps will crop up, such as the browser, your photo gallery, and Gmail. You can then access your current app and launch another one and view both at the same time.

Other features include the Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2 operating system, 8GB of internal memory, a microSD card slot that can hold up to 64GB of expandable memory, and Bluetooth 4.0. Currently, the handset's fastest data connectivity capability is HSPA+.

Hardware specs consist of a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and a 2,100mAh battery. On the back, you'll get an 8-megapixel camera capable of shooting 1080p video, and on the front is a 2-megapixel camera.

OutlookIf the Samsung Galaxy Grand smartphone were ever to come to the U.S., it'd be great to see 4G LTE capability. This would make it even more appealing on major carriers like AT&T and Verizon, which Galaxy handsets are no strangers to.

I do especially like the Multi Window feature. Many devices that sport huge screens these days lack any particular asset that takes full advantage of the real estate. At least with this software addition, users can get the most out of both their apps and the Grand's display.

*  Bluetooth 4.0,
* Wi-Fi, GPS, NFC and a 2,100mAh battery.
* We don't know the exact SoC inside this phone but from what we have seen in the leaked benchmark scores the Galaxy Premier runs on a TI OMAP4470 with a dual-core 1.5GHz ARM Cortex A9 CPU and PowerVR SGX544 GPU.

* As mentioned before, the Galaxy Premier runs on Samsung's Android skin and comes with all the usual bells and whistles you expect such as S Voice, S Beam, Smart Stay, Pop-up Play, etc.

Google Nexus 7

The good: The Nexus 7's quad-core Tegra 3 processor delivers fast performance and a beautiful and responsive screen. Also, it's comfortable to hold and Android 4.1 brings a surplus of welcome additions. At only $200, the Nexus 7 is a steal.

The bad: The lack of built-in expandable storage and omission of HDMI are disappointing, and the design follows the plain, black tablet mold. The top and bottom bezels are a bit too thick.

The bottom line:
With a beautiful screen, fast performance, a comfortable design, and overall great media options, the Nexus 7 is easily the best 7-inch tablet available and one of the top tablets on the market.

The Nexus 7 tablet embodies the moment when tablet buyers no longer have to compromise performance for price. No other 7-inch, $200 to $250 tablet combines this level of performance, with Android 4.1's features, in such a comfortable design.

What buyers lose with the lack of built-in expandable storage options and the omission of a back camera, they’ll gain in complete OS flexibility in a powerful and cheap tablet.
Design

Yep, the Nexus 7 is yet another black tablet (unless you got one with a white back at Google I/O) in the long line of black tablets. Yet, it does its best to break from the cookie cutter mold of most slates. Chief among those efforts is a rubbery, leathery, grippy back texture, similar to what we saw on the Acer Iconia Tab A510, but with both "Nexus" and "Asus" embossed on it. It may not look like much, but the inclusion of this seemingly small bit of design panache makes the tablet one of the most comfortable I've ever held.
Then there's the bezel. Held in portrait, the right and left side bezels of the tablet are refreshingly thin, while the top and bottom are thicker than what I usually find on 7-inch tablets. While the thicker bezel design can be useful as a place to rest your thumbs while holding the tablet, they are a bit too thick for my taste and make the tablet feel needlessly long.

Speaking of holding, the Nexus 7 is noticeably lighter than the Kindle Fire and, thanks to its beveled bottom and painted silver trim, actually looks thinner. Or at least sleeker. There's definitely some kind of slimming illusion going on, as I wasn't the only one to think it's much skinnier than the Kindle Fire. Turns out, it is thinner, but only by 0.04 inch.
